Sightsavers in collaboration with Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi completed the field trial pilots in Pakistan for the WISE Award Winning ICAN tool inclusive in 2023. The International Common Assessment for Numeracy (ICAN) available in 11 languages is a response by the member countries under the PAL Network for a comparable, low-cost simple-to-use assessment to measure Foundational numeracy. It meets the Global South realities. ICAN is accessible to all to measure and monitor progress on SDG 4.1.1 (a) and is aligned with the Global Proficiency Framework.
Using the guidelines and adapted materials, sector expert teachers are capable of successfully administering ICAN to children with severe sensory loss – i.e., blind or severely visually impaired children who are braille users and severely or profoundly deaf children who communicate through sign language and total communication method. It is anticipated that teachers without sector expertise will be able to deliver ICAN successfully to children with mild to moderate sensory impairment – i.e., children with low vision who can read large print and children with mild and moderate degrees of hearing loss who communicate through speech.
As the findings suggest that Children with auditory impairments had lower learning outcomes as compared to children with Visual Impairment, A study must be carried out to identify barriers to numeracy including both school-going children with auditory impairment and OOSC, along with strategies for overcoming those barriers. |
