‘50% children across province unable to read’

LAHORE: The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2011 has revealed that approximately 50 percent children across Punjab cannot read a sentence in Urdu or in their mother tongue, while at least 66 percent children cannot read a sentence of grade two level English.

LAHORE - The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2011 has revealed that in Punjab almost 50 per cent children of level Class-II cannot even read a sentence in Urdu or in their mother tongue while 66 per cent children cannot read a sentence in English.

ASER 2011’s launching ceremony was held at Children Library Complex here on Tuesday.

Education standards: Make college graduates teach at schools

LAHORE:
“The government should make teaching at public schools mandatory for fresh college graduates for at least a month. We are hoping to test this at LUMS,” Syed Babar Ali, one of the founding members of the Lahore University of Management and Sciences (LUMS), said on Tuesday.

The Annual Status of Education Report 2011, a household survey in Punjab which assessed learning outcomes of school-going (5-16 years) age children in 28 districts (rural areas), has found that almost 50 per cent children cannot even read a sentence in Urdu or in their mother tongue while 66 per cent children cannot read a sentence in English of class-II.

LAHORE, Feb 7: A sample survey shows that over 16.1 per cent of school-going age children are not attending any school in Punjab and those attending show poor learning competencies.
